Chapter 28 May 91 AD Cuba- Invasion

Off the shores of Cuba, ten longships sailed with the intentions of conquest. The ships sailed close enough that they could shout to one another. Each ship contained eleven or twelve Sea Wardens, each looking for the smoke that gave away the location of a village.

Yaholo was the Landowner leading this expedition. This expedition was not about conquest but dispersing the Sea Wardens. After one Sea Warden joined the rebels, the Landowners realized they had too many Sea Wardens for the villages they had. They couldn’t just demote the Sea Wardens to peasant status because that would just give the Sea Wardens more reason to rebel. At the same time, they didn’t have the heart to do mass executions. Instead, they were going to go around the island, conquering village after village as quickly as possible until they had the Sea Wardens safely dispersed around the island. If a few ignorant savages or Sea Wardens got killed, then that’s a price the Landowners were willing to make.

As they sailed, one of the Sea Wardens yelled out, “SMOKE!”

Yaholo looked up, saw it, and yelled out, “HEAD TO SHORE!”

One by one, the ships quickly turned toward the shore and made their way toward the nearest beach. As they landed on the shore Yaholo, and the Sea Wardens leaped out of their boats. Without the buffalo Riders, they would have to quickly surround and invade the village, and chances were they had already been spotted.

Yaholo encouraged his men to rush to the village as quickly as possible by giving his fastest Sea Wardens the choice of whether they wanted to stay in the newly captured village or not. There were only five slots per village, and since there were a lot of advantages to being one of the five guards, it was a sought-after position.

While Yaholo jogged to the village, some of the men were sprinting ahead. Minutes later, Yaholo could hear screams, battle cries, and the crash of weapons. By the time Yaholo reached the village, the battle was already over. A couple of Sea Wardens were dead, and a handful were wounded, but nearly all were healthy. They forced the terrified villagers onto their knees, next to wounded and dead warriors. The battle was a foregone conclusion, since the Sea Wardens outnumbered their enemies, had better weapons, had better training, and the attack came out of nowhere. There was no way for the village to even know the attack was coming since Yaholo never knew this village existed until he saw the smoke the village produced.

Yaholo yelled out a question to the captured villagers, “WHERE IS YOUR CHIEF AND ELDERS!?”

Several of the people pointed at different men. One of the men yelled out, “I AM YOUR CHIEF! WHY DID YOU BETRAY ME!” None of his people answered him.

Yaholo didn’t care; he asked, “Who were the first five to make it to the village?”

Five of the Sea Wardens had big grins on their faces as they raised their hands; one was wounded.
